“Have no fear of perfection – You’ll never reach it.”
I’m nearing my 39th birthday at the end of this year. Perfect is SO far from the way I see myself unlike wen I photograph some of my models. I see perfect.
They are young; they have beautiful skin, hair, nails, and teeth. Their bodies aren’t damaged from having kids, gaining weight, or the effects of aging. A lot of them are ambitious and facing fears to do what they love. They are perfect in my eyes.
Guilt swept over me as I continued to photograph more models. I felt like I was betraying the same women I remind are beautiful, beyond what she sees or what she tells herself – YOU are beautiful. Now here I am showcasing what I see as “perfect”. I felt like a fraud, but I loved what I was doing.
Finally I see more clearly.
When Annie showed up for her photo shoot she warned me she was nervous. Why? Why would such a beautiful woman be nervous?
As we began shooting I could see the doubt in her movements. But something amazing started to unfold half way through our shoot. I was watching Annie transform into a confident woman.
The more she felt confident the more her beauty showed through. After our session, Annie hugged me and thanked me. She told me she felt more confident in her modeling – that I had helped her. That’s when I had my “aha” moment.
No matter what, we are all the same. I don’t care if you are 12 years old or 112.
Perfect is an illusion.
Annie reminded me that we ALL struggle with the false beliefs we have told ourselves. Whether it is our perception of our looks, intelligence, or our abilities. We tell ourselves lies that we believe as truth. I no longer feel like a fraud in what I do. I help people through my art.
I help people see what they cannot because of the lies they have told themselves.
